The Tag Following feature allows you to follow Tags so you can choose whether to receive in‑app and/or email notifications about new posts that use those Tags.
Following your favorite Tags makes it easy to keep up with topics and products you care about, without having to follow entire Categories. Even if you don’t enable notifications, all of your followed Tags are listed on the Followed Content page, providing quick access to their content.
TIP: Over time, there may be posts using a followed Tag that generate a high volume of engagement and notifications you’re not interested in. Rather than turning off Tag‑based notifications entirely, you can granularly mute individual posts, just as you can for category‑based notifications. This preserves other useful notifications while silencing noisy discussions you're not interested in. Check out this article to learn more.
Follow a Tag
You can follow Tags from anywhere in your community where Tags appear, such as under post titles, in Tag Cloud widgets, or in search results.
Following a Tag (and unfollowing one) is accomplished within Tag Cards.
- Click a Tag to open its Tag Card.
- Click Follow.
TIP: In the Tag Card, you can view the Tag's associated content via the Posts and Groups buttons.
This action:
- Starts tracking the Tag as followed, and
- Adds the Tag to your Followed Content page, on the Tags tab.
NOTE: Tag Cards only allow the following and unfollowing of Tags. Learn how to manage Tag notifications and set default preferences in the sections below.
Followed Content page
Any Tags you follow are added to your profile’s Followed Content page, on the Tags tab.
On this tab, you can:
- See which Tags you’re currently following
- Update notification options for each Tag
- Unfollow Tags you’re no longer interested in
TIP: If you follow a lot of Tags, you can find them more easily using the available Sort By options: Most Recently Followed, Oldest Followed, or Alphabetical.
Notification preferences
To manage whether or not to receive notifications from Tags you've followed, and which types of notifications, click its bell icon (reference the image above).
- Notify me of new posts: This refers to all new posts using the Tag, which includes discussions, questions, ideas, etc. Check the boxes to control whether you'll receive notifications. Each Type is explained below.
- Unfollow Tag: If you’re already following a Tag, you can click Unfollow Tag at any time to disable all notifications and remove it from your list of Followed Tags.
Notification types
When setting your Tag notification preferences, you can control the type of notification received via the the bell and/or email boxes.
- Check the bell icon boxes to receive near real-time popups directly in the community (at the bottom left of your screen) AND messages in your Notifications Panel.
- Check the email icon boxes to have emails sent to your personal inbox. Keep in mind this option sends a separate email for each new post/comment using the Tag, which can result in numerous emails, so it's generally only recommended for Tags in which you're heavily invested or interested in.
TIP: In your personal inbox, these emails may end up in your Spam folder, so be sure to check there if you don't see them.
TIP: Because each new qualifying post can generate its own email, we recommend using email notifications only for your most important Tags, relying on in‑app notifications for broader coverage.
Set your default notification preferences
From your profile, you can set default Tag notification preferences that will automatically be applied whenever you follow a new Tag. While you're still free to update these defaults later, from your Followed Content page, they save time if you typically choose the same options for every Tag you follow.
To set your default Tag notification preferences:
- Click the Notification Preferences link on th,e right side of the page (see above).
- Scroll down to the Tags section (see below).
- For the Notify me of new posts option, choose whether you want:
- In‑app notifications (bell),
- Email notifications (envelope),
- or both.
Set default Tag preferences for your users
Admins can define default notification preferences for Tag‑based notifications that will automatically be inherited by new users to your community.
NOTE: "New user" equates to users who have created an account and have logged in at least once. All users can update these default preferences at any time from their profile > Notification Preferences page.
NOTE: You cannot define a list of specific Tags that all users will automatically follow.
- Access the Dashboard.
- Navigate to Settings > Membership > User Preferences.
- Click Edit Default Notifications.
- In the dialog, click the Tags tab.
- Check the popup and/or email boxes to set your default preferences for new users.
- Click Save.
Unsubscribe from Tag email notifications
Tag-based email notifications include an Unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message.
When you click this link:
- You are immediately unsubscribed from that specific Tag, meaning you'll no longer receive email notification from that Tag's content moving forward.
- You are taken to the standard Unsubscribe page, which shows why you received that notification, such as:
- You bookmarked this content
- You are following the category
- You are following the user
- You are following this tag
From this page, you can:
- Undo the unsubscribe if you clicked the link by mistake.
- Adjust other related notification “reasons” at the same time (where available).
NOTE: Unsubscribing from a tag-based notification is scoped only to that notification type. It does not affect your other follows, such as Categories.
