In Higher Logic Vanilla (Vanilla), users with the proper permission (typically admins and moderators) can post new content and publish updates to existing content without triggering notifications. This is known as silent posting, and is particularly useful for community managers who may need to stage content, correct issues, or discreetly share sensitive updates without users knowing while still maintaining a full audit trail.
What content can I post silently?
There is nuance as to when silent posting is possible, as outlined below:
- Posting new content: You can post silently when creating discussions, questions, ideas, and any custom post types you may have. You cannot post silently when creating events or knowledge base articles.
- Updating existing content: Silent posting is possible when updating ALL content types in your community: discussions, questions, custom Post Types, ideas, events, and articles.
Required permission

How to post silently
When creating or editing the applicable content types, outlined in the What content can I post silently? section above, you can choose to publish the content with or without updates, as shown in the dialog below.
Choose the option appropriate for your needs:
- If yes, the content is published and all associated notifications are sent (email, in-app, and digest).
- If no, the content is published but no notifications are sent and it's excluded from digests.
The dialog will be slightly different when editing events and articles but the functionality is the same.
Silent posting when scheduling your content
Silent posting is also possible for scheduled posts: when you schedule a post, you have the flexibility to choose whether to notify users about the post once it's published, as shown below.
