As a member of an online community, you'll likely Follow and engage with numerous posts from other users, not to mention create your own posts that others engage with. Over time, you may come across threads that produce a high volume of engagement that you're not interested in, and this engagement can result in a similar high volume of notifications that flood your inbox.
To mitigate frustration in such scenarios, Higher Logic Vanilla (Vanilla) includes the Mute Posts feature that allows you to stop receiving notifications for specific posts, without unfollowing Categories, removing bookmarks, or turning off post notifications as a whole. This feature is designed to reduce unwanted notifications, especially from busy or "chit chat" threads, making notification management more granular and user-friendly.
📝 NOTE: Muting a post suppresses all email, in-app (bell), and pop-up notifications for that post, regardless of whether you're following the associated Category, have bookmarked the post, get @ mentioned in it, or receive ideation status updates on it. In short, all notification activity from a muted post is 100% silenced.
Mute a post
You can mute a post in two ways: from your community or directly within a notification email.
📝 NOTES:
- In communities using custom layouts, a mute icon will appear in the meta row of discussion lists and post pages, visually indicating a post is muted.
- If you unmute a post, you'll resume receiving notifications for new activity but will not receive missed notifications retroactively.
- You cannot mute multiple posts at once; posts can only be muted individually.
Mute a post from your community
- Navigate either to the main Recent Posts page or an individual post you want to mute.
- Click the ellipsis (…) menu and select Mute.
The post is immediately muted. The menu option changes to Unmute, which you can select at any time to unmute the post.
Mute a post from a notification email
- Open a notification email you received from a post you want to mute.
- Click the Mute this Post link located at the bottom of the email.
You’ll be taken to a page where you’ll see a confirmation message and an Undo option in case you change your mind. Confirm the action to immediately mute the post.
You can always navigate to a muted post in the community and select the Unmute option from its (…) menu to unmute it at any time.
