Social Sign In
You can find the main article on using Twitter to allow your users to sign in here:
https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/36-social-connect-options#twitter
The process above is only required if you would like users to be able to connect their Twitter account to their community profile. This is required for Social Sign In as well as for automatic Social Share and recommended for all integrations for the best possible user experience.
The benefit is making an even deeper integration with Twitter, which makes it easier for your community members to publish content without going to Twitter.
Social Reactions
Social reactions add a twitter share option to your community that users can hit to share their favourite posts directly to twitter:
If you do not have your community connected to twitter, users would be prompted to log in to twitter each time they click this button and will not be able to link their forum and twitter accounts. This is not optimal UX, but functional if you are not able to set up the twitter integration (as described here: https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/36-social-connect-options#twitter)
Automatic Social Share

Social Section of User Profiles
When you have any social connection enabled, you will notice a new section of user profile:
This is where users can connect or disconnect their social media accounts and their forum account.
If you have not fully connected your social app, this page will not work properly and will display an error. It is recommended that you complete the integration or hide this section from profiles via CSS.
