Vanilla Knowledge is a feature that you can use to create custom knowledge bases in and for your Higher Logic Vanilla (Vanilla) community.
📝 NOTE: This article is an overview of knowledge bases in Vanilla Knowledge. To learn more about creating a KB, setting permissions, Universal Content, migrating existing content, and other KB-related information, see:
Highlights
Vanilla Knowledge gives you the ability to:
- create either of two types of knowledge base (KB) to ensure you can offer whichever better suits the needs of your community. Refer to Knowledge Base types, below.
- create multiple knowledge bases so that you can offer content that individually supports one of several products or provides content in different languages.
📝 NOTE: Multiple knowledge bases must be of the same type.
Knowledge Base types
When creating a KB, you'll have to choose what type of knowledge base you want. It's important that you know the difference and choose the type you want. There are two types:
Guide
This type is intended for a series of articles that should be read in sequential order (such as a product user guide); Categories serve as chapters.
⭐️ EXAMPLE: The Vanilla Release Notes KB is an example of this KB type.
Help Center
This type is intended for a collection of "stand-alone" articles that are related but tend to be self-contained; they are consulted individually for a specific topic and/or process, and are usually found by browsing and doing a search. These articles can be organized in Categories.
⭐️ EXAMPLE: The Vanilla Forums Product Documentation KB is an example of this KB type.
Knowledge Base set up
Setting up a knowledge base in Vanilla is quite simple for an Administrator.
The Dashboard has a dedicated Knowledge Bases page that lists your KBs. On this page, you can add, edit, and delete your KBs.
- To learn more, see the section Create a Knowledge Base, in:
Knowledge Base permissions
You can control who can view, and who can create content in, your knowledge bases.
In the Dashboard, you can set permissions for Roles (Membership > Roles & Permissions) and then further refine them for each KB with KB-specific Viewers and Content Creators settings.
- To learn more about setting Roles and KB permissions, see:
Share Knowledge Base content
Vanilla Knowledge lets you share articles across multiple knowledge bases. Vanilla's Universal Content feature enables you to configure a KB such that its content is searchable and viewable from multiple knowledge bases.
- To learn more about making KB content more widely accessible, see:
