Can you hide a category from the title bar (top navigation menu)?

I'm working on restricting certain categories for a specific role and I removed the permission for this role to access the category in question but it looks like it only removes it from the category widgets but not from the navigation bar. Is there a way to restrict view or an alternative?

Hi @amorales,

Navigation links are configured in your applied style guide. You would need to edit your default style guide → select the 'Title Bar' option → Edit 'Navigation Links'

These are not dismissed if the loading user does not have permission to view the category, given that they are manually configured.

@amorales I think you can manually edit the links in the navigation bar. I do not think you can make it role specific. I had asked similar question a while ago.

Thank you so much to both! @Jocelyn, that's what I was wondering, whether these could be made role-specific. 🤔 If I restrict the category, why do they still see the content in that category when they go through the title bar?

@amorales I am not sure what you are seeing. If the category is present in the navigation and they do not have access, they should see permission error when clicked on it.

There is a way of restricting a menu item to be visible by a global permission, for example, only users who can moderate by going into the Style Guide > Styles > Advanced Settings and adding a Permission attribute to the in the menu item.

So this doesn't mean one role in particular, but any role that has post.moderate permissions.

Hey @amorales - wanted to jump in here with another suggestion.

If you're using Layout Editor, you could also set up your Quicklinks to be role (or rank) specific so you could really customize the options available based on the user.

Jocelyn is correct that the user will still see the title bar drop down regardless of if they have permission to access those categories, but then they will get a permission error when they click it.

I'm testing this in staging @Kirstie Macfarlane and even though I removed the permission to access the categories, they are not getting the permission error. They can still load the discussion page although nothing is showing except the widgets which they have access to.

Hey @amorales - thanks for the update, that's good to know regarding your custom layout. That's an change to how I expected it to behave!

I would suggest that you update all of the widgets to only be visible to those roles that should see them, and adding a CTA widget that is only visible to roles without permission explaining that they don't have access to this category (and if there's anything they can do to gain access).

Component react.asset.createComment had an error.

Permission Problem You need the session.valid permission to do that.
