Great discussion Alex, this is a question we ask in our Community as well. Currently we look at pageviews, active users and contributors - but our community is also very lurker-heavy and I'd love to find a better way to capture the silent, even non-signed in community members.

We've been toying with trying to set up a metric of users who browse the site for longer than X amount of seconds/minutes, but haven't found a good solution.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear it.
