The Shift
Traditional attribution is fading. Influence is rising.
Traditional Focus | Why It Falls Short | Modern Replacement |
|---|
Page views | Measures visibility, not value | Repeat participation |
Traffic sources | AI obscures origin | Community-assisted outcomes |
Click-through rates | Captures action, not impact | Depth of engagement |
Time on page | Passive consumption | Active contribution |
New Users | Acquisition-only view | Retention and return behavior |
What to Measure Now
1.Engagement Depth
Are members meaningfully interacting?
- Replies per discussion
- Multi-day conversations
- % of posts with responses
- Repeat contributors
2. Trust and Retention
Are members coming back and relying on the community?
- Return visitor rate
- Active member growth over time
- Learner-to-contributor conversion
3. Knowledge Application
Is shared knowledge being used?
- Best practice adoption (qualitative or tagged)
- Repeated solutions referenced across threads
- Member-reported outcomes
4. Community-Assisted Outcomes
Where is community influencing business results?
- Support deflection
- Product adoption or feature usage
- Reduced onboarding friction
- Increased customer confidence
Measuring Community Influence
Instead of asking:
“Where did this user come from?”
Start asking:
- “Did the community influence their decision?”
- “Did they engage before taking action?”
- “Was their question answered by a peer?”
- “Did community interaction reduce friction?”
Tell the Story
Metrics alone aren’t enough. Pair them with narrative.
Simple Attribution Story Framework:
- Challenge: What problem did the member have?
- Community Interaction: What happened in the community?
- Outcome: What changed for the member?
- Impact: What does this mean for the business?
Example:
A customer exploring a new feature asks a question à receives peer validation and use cases à adopts the feature à avoids submitting a support ticket
Quick Reflection
Use this to get started:
- What are you currently measuring that reflects visibility instead of influence?
- Which of the “modern metrics” can you start tracking today?
- Where is your community already influencing outcomes that you are not capturing?
Communities are not just destinations. They are decision-making infrastructure.
